Five Myths Of Cultural Engagement
Have you encountered any of these myths?
·
R. L. Copple
Fantasy and Christianity
The rejection of fantasy causes one to limit God.

Books Versus The Screen
The vast majority of the best stories are within the pages of books, not on the little or big screen.

World-building: The Undervalued Element Of Speculative Fiction
Books that transport me somewhere else have a dense culture filled with rituals, slang, moral right and wrong, tradition, art, entertainment, bureaucracy, and so much more.

Idolatry And Reading-Fandom
Religion scholar David Chidester has famously argued that baseball, Coca-Cola, rock ânâ roll, Tupperwareâand even the Human Genome Projectâserve, for their biggest fans, as âreligious fakes,â meaning they play the role of religion, though they arenât the real thing.

Scary Title Alert: The Discipline Of Reading Fiction
Readers get inoculated by “fun” fiction, and no longer approach stories as vehicles of ideas, shown not told. When we as Christians do look for meaning, we are primarily looking for a Christ figure and a picture of redemption. We rarely dig deeper.

Realism And Twenty-first Century Stories
If all characters are victims of disaster, I suggest readers or viewers stop caring and start looking for the âout.â Will the character die and come back? Have a narrow escape? Have a death that only looks like death? In truth, all the arguing and betrayal and refusal becomesâpredictable and boring and unrealistic. Soon the characters seem more like caricatures because none acts with nobility or courage or hope. All display their flawed selves with so little inner struggle. And this, weâve come to believe, is realistic.

The Echoes Of Christmas
God is the Author of the Christmas story. I wonder how far its echoes can, and should, reach in all stories. What would a story look like, written in a spirit that, like Scrooge, honors Christmas and keeps it all the year?

Seeking A Better Country Than Middle Earth
Watching Peter Jackson interpret J.R.R. Tolkien is like watching a master jazz impresario play Beethoven. The original is classic; the interpretation as a new work is equally brilliant.

Evil And The One Ring To Rule Them All
Tolkien, as most speculative readers know, was not attempting an allegory. Nevertheless, his mythopoetic world, the result of his sub-creation, contains parallels with reality. In fact, his world throws revelatory light on what he believed about certain things in the real world. One of those things is evil.

Stories Of Sacrifice
I think there’s something to the idea that
self-sacrifice is appealing
. C. S. Lewis was particularly good at weaving self-sacrifice into his stories. It, of course, is crucial in the (traditional) opening book of Narnia–
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
.

Sentimentality And Christian Fiction
I believe that stories that suggest God never brings things to right here in this life are just as untrue as those that imply He always does so. Perhaps J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis were such masters because they knew how to show both the truth of this world and the truth of Christian hope.

Good Versus Mediocre
I found myself asking, Is one person’s good book another person’s mediocre fare? And if so, is there in reality a standard of art writers should be aiming for and readers should be looking to support?
